    Some patients have great difficulty breathing because their nasal septum (the divider between the 2 nostril passages) is extremely deviated. Sufferers may have had a traumatic accident, and the nasal cartilages have collapsed into their airway. A detailed physical exam and aesthetic assessment are always required prior to planning a rhinoplasty surgery , and only then can a true surgical plan be formed.     A nasal septum should be centered, separating the left and right sides of the nose equally. Many people have a nasal septum that is not centered, but a “deviated septum” occurs when the septum is well outside the realm of creating balanced nasal passages. A deviated or crooked septum can cause difficulty breathing through the nose. It can also impact drainage of the sinuses, causing health concerns like chronic sinus infections, breathing problems and discomfort. Septoplasty can correct this issue for better health and comfort for the patient.

    Restoring Nasal Function Through Septoplasty

    The goal of septoplasty is to remedy nasal passage obstructions by modifying a deviated septum to create a septum that is more balanced and centered. The cartilage inside the nose is shaped and moved to relieve the obstruction of the nasal passage, allowing for proper breathing and sinus drainage.

    In many cases, a deviated septum and septoplasty do not impact the shape of the nose. However, if rhinoplasty is needed or wanted, it can be incorporated with this procedure.
